Discover Your Pomsky’s Family Tree with
APKC Pedigree®(BETA)

We are currently working to develop a database that is visible to APKC® Breeder members that will include health information, verified health testing done, and lineage history for Pomskies registered with the APKC®.

Okay, so exactly what is this pedigree thing? In its simplest form, it's a family tree.

To register a Pomsky with the American Pomsky Kennel Club®, you will need to have details of your pup's dam and sire and their breeder or owners. Breeders will also usually have to provide the names of the puppy's grandparents and other lineage information that is known. Any responsible breeder of pedigree dogs should be able to provide this information.

Normally, a breeder will provide a pedigree showing three to four generations. The pedigree begins on the left with the individual dog or litter and moves one column to the right with each earlier generation, giving the registered names of the ancestors. Titles earned are shown on most pedigrees, and very often the pedigree will give additional information, such as the dogs' colors, Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) ratings, and special honors.

So why bother buying a puppy with a pedigree if you're looking for a pet, not a show or breeding Pomsky? For several reasons. First, the pedigree gives you an indication of whether the breeder is a serious, responsible breeder of quality dogs, or just a puppy producer trying to make a buck. How can you, a novice in the world of canine pedigrees, tell the difference? First, look at the names of the dogs. Serious breeders have kennel names that appear in their dogs' names as well as detailed information available about their puppy’s lineage.

But hold on, you say. You just want a nice, healthy, reasonably well-behaved pet Pomsky. Who cares about the breeder's goals? Well, to be honest, you should. Looks, health, and temperament are all influenced by a pup's genetic background.
