Frequently Asked Questions
Question: What breeds do you allow?
Answer: Currently, the only breeds allowed in our Pomskies are the Siberian Husky, the Pomeranian, and the American Eskimo. We know that additional SPITZ breeds should be considered, but we strongly feel that this should be done in a documented and scientific way. The current way of 12% showing up on a DNA test so roll with it is not an adequate process for something this important. Also, secret lines and behind closed doors are not acceptable. This should be public for everyone to see the challenges and progress. Experimental breeders should use top AKC lineage dogs for testing, and image documentation of the entire process, structure changes, etc. Please send your ideas if you're interested in participating or have specific ideas for a process that shows we are definitively working towards a specific purpose to the APKC® email.
PET OWNERS
Question: As a Pomsky Owner, how do I register a Pomsky?
Answer: If you want to officially register your Pomsky, start by ordering a DNA test through Embark. If the results confirm that your dog has Pomsky ancestry, you can register them as an APKC® Pomsky. First, become an APKC Basic Member to gain access to the Registration section of our website. Since APKC is an official registry—not a pseudo registry—we require proof “Pomsky” through DNA. You’ll need to submit either your Pomsky’s DNA test results or the DNA results of their parents.
Question: Do I have to have a Pomsky to be a member?
Answer: No, you don't have to have a Pomsky. This is a place to learn about Pomskies. Anyone can be involved through a basic membership. Membership fees help the club rescue Pomskies, host events, and educate the public about this amazing breed.
Question: How do you determine a good/bad breeder?
Answer: Good breeders will follow the APKC® Code of Ethics, and it’s important to consider the thought behind breeding. Are they intentionally trying to find ways to get around standard breeding practices? Are they breeding dogs with failed tests, or not testing dogs because they know they will fail? Are they breeding dogs that are at risk or displaying diseases? Are they selling with breed rights to just anyone? Do they have an interview process or simply sell to anyone who presses a "buy" button? Do they take responsibility for their dogs for life, offering to take the dog back at any time and for any reason? These are standard thoughts that indicate whether they are a breeder with a strong moral ethic or not.
BREEDERS
Question: Can a breeder register previous litters?
Answer: Yes, the APKC® highly recommends that you register previous litters and generations so the pedigree tree is as complete as possible. The database will only be as full as what the breeders put in, so we highly encourage all adults and litters to be registered.
Question: What is Limited Registration vs Full Registration?
Answer: This is a term used by many breeders and AKC. Limited Registration means you cannot breed the dog that you purchased. Our APKC breeders have STRICT spay/neuter clauses in their contracts, with significant consequences for breeding to protect their lines and to protect the puppy. Full Registration is more expensive, an upcharge of breeding rights (often 1-3k more) as the puppy must meet breeding quality standards, and you are paying for the rights to use their line, and in some ways, part of their reputation.
Question: How does the payment system work?
Answer: As a legitimate 501(c)4, we have a dedicated American Pomsky Kennel Club® bank account with Bank of America. So payment is not done through PayPal, it is through standard credit card, Stripe specifically.
