What Should I Feed My Puppy?
Written By American Pomsky Kennel Club
We see this question a lot on the boards, and this is a topic that should be discussed with your breeder prior to getting the puppy.
If your breeder has not provided guidance on what puppy food your puppy should have - then keep reading!
First of all, NEVER give your puppy cow’s milk! This causes diarrhea and stomach upset. Also, Pomskies do better with grain-inclusive foods.
Most Pomsky breeders provide a sample bag of the dog food that the puppy has been on and done well eating. Our recommendation would be to continue feeding that for at least a couple of months while the puppy transitions to their new home. 💩 Stress poo is real! Stress plus the addition of a new food will cause there to be even more Poo-Meggedon events.
If you decide to give your puppy a different food than what your breeder has raised them on, transition them slowly onto the new food over the course of 2 weeks.

Should you feed raw?
There’s so much information (and misinformation) on the internet regarding both dry kibble and raw fed.
How do you know what is best to feed your Pomsky?
MASS MANUFACTURED KIBBLE
Pros
If the Kibble has a WSAVA seal, it means it has been third party tested to be nutritionally complete
It’s convenient and easy to measure out
It’s shelf stable, so you can store months in advance easily
Cons
Not all dry food is third party tested
Some dry food brands have been notorious for FDA recalls
Boutique/small brands do not have the testing necessary to determine adequate nutrition
Some dogs are sensitive to certain proteins
Processed food is not as good as raw food
RAW DIET
Pros
Properly balanced raw fed is beneficial for most dogs
If your dog has food sensitivities, they often do better on raw
With the bone content in raw fed, dogs have better teeth health
Cons
Macros can be complicated to learn and making sure your dog has balanced nutrition is vital
Dogs who do not get the correct macros may suffer health issues
Preparation requires you to source and handle raw meats and organs
Adequate freezer space is required
Vets not trained in nutrition may not approve of this choice
Many Pomsky owners find the best results using a combination of both WSAVA approved kibble and then supplement with raw bones, chicken/quail/duck eggs, raw whole frozen fish, organ meat and more. There are several wonderful Facebook groups dedicated to raw fed dogs that can direct you to a wealth of information.
Consulting with someone who specializes in raw feed can explain the macros and nutrient requirements for the health of your Pomsky.
