Ways to Keep Pomskies Cool This Summer!
To quote Rob Thomas, “Man, its a hot one…”
Summer is upon us and already we have some record-breaking temperatures across the US. How do we safely keep our Pomskies cool?
Most Pomskies love to swim in the pool with you!
Cool Them Down
Give your Pomskies plenty of fresh, clean water
They also love ice cubes to drink or play in
Give them a baby pool to splash around in
Plenty of shade
Keep your dog cool with fans, A/C, cooling gel vests, or cooling gel mats
Large ceramic floor tiles are also a favorite for them to lie on
Safe Cool Treats
Refrigerated Watermelon
Frozen ice chunks with bits of carrots, blueberries, watermelon, cantaloupe (List of toxic fruits/veggies)
Doggie-friendly ice cream (in moderation)
“Easy recipe: Bone ice cube trays. Fill the tray with a mixture of mashed banana and chopped berries. Freeze overnight and serve.”
Exercising in the Heat
Take them for walks in the early morning or late evening.
Pavement/Streets: Not sure if the pavement is too hot? Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog to walk. (Resource link) 120 degrees is the threshold for both humans/dogs for pain and blisters.
Play indoor fetch, food puzzles, teach them scent games, etc
Pull out your water hose and play together. This keeps them cool and helps exercise them at the same time.
Note: Let the hose run for a minute. If water is sitting in the hose, it can be near scalding temps!
Water Intoxication/Dehydration Risks
Signs of dehydration and/or overheating: Lethargy, sluggishness, dry gums, sunken eyes
Dehydration is the Number #1 killer of dogs in the summertime!
Water intoxication is real, especially if you’re boating/swimming in the summertime. Here’s an article that shows how water intoxication can kill your pet, and how you can prevent it.
“With the heat we are experiencing right now, we are serving up our raw meals nearly frozen. *Firm but not rock solid or cold enough for their tongues to stick. 😁😋”
Summer Grooming Requirements
Do not ever shave your Pomsky, even in the summertime; the double-coat insulates them from the heat and prevents sunburn (more info here)
Brush them daily to remove loose hairs to allow airflow
Pomskies “sweat” through their paw pads, so trimming the excess hair between their paws helps keep them cool
If they are really struggling, you can take emergency measures and wipe rubbing alcohol in their ears and place them in front of a fan
