Breeders - C-section Milk Production

Has your bitch had an emergency C-section or is not dropping her milk supply?

Below are some common ways that you can encourage milk production:

Speak with your Vet about Reglan (Metoclopramide). It’s readily available as it’s an anti-nausea medication. It causes the release of prolactin in the post-whelp dam. It's reliable and works within 12 hours! Dosage Reglan at 0.5 mg every 6 hours, with Oxytocin every 2 hours, to jumpstart lactation. Prolactin stimulates the mammary glands to produce milk, and the Oxytocin causes the milk to let out of the gland into the duct.

Fenugreek. Caplet form is stronger than tea form. It’s readily available at any corner drugstore. It’s safe for canines and humans and is often recommended for human milk production. This can boost milk supplies for larger litters as well. Be forewarned, it will cause your Pomsky mama to have a maple syrup smell.

Chaste tree fruit is also known to boost milk production and is safe for dogs, but is not as readily available.

Revivalanimal.com has Oxy Mama which boosts milk production and good to have on hand during emergencies.

Puppies have to be fed every 2 hours, so the quicker you can stimulate the milk production, the better your puppies will be (and you’ll get more sleep!)

As always, verify all information with your vet prior to use.
