Pomsky Shows

Bringing the Pomsky Community Together!

The official term for dog shows, Conformation Events, evaluate dogs by how closely they resemble the breed’s standard. As we are developing the Pomsky breed, hosting these events will help us determine what the Pomsky breed standard is.

While a dog show may look like a beauty pageant, it’s not. Dogs are not being compared to each other; they’re being measured by how closely they conform to the standard that has been defined ( APKC Pomsky Breed Standard). Why? Because the closer a dog’s appearance is to the breed’s standard, the better that dog’s ability will be to produce puppies that meet the standard. It’s also the reason why spayed or neutered purebreds and dogs that do not have DNA proof are ineligible to compete in the Pomsky Standard Conformation dog shows.

Showing your Dog

We can’t stress enough how important it is for you to get familiar with what actually happens at a conformation event. Go to a show, or several, and familiarize yourself with what happens in the show ring, and to experience the energy and camaraderie between the spectators in the stands and the competitors (also called “exhibitors”). It’ll also give you an idea of whether you want to show your dog yourself, or hire a professional (“handler”).

Preparing for a Show

In addition, your dog should know basic behavior like how to walk on a leash on your left side and how to properly stack. Your Pomsky should also be very comfortable around other dogs. On top of taking classes, we encourage you to visit dog parks to practice socialization skills. Finally, before your first show, your pet should be well-groomed—think trimmed nails, tangle-free fur, and no dirt. We encourage owners and breeders to attend AKC conformation classes and focus on how to handle your dog in the show ring.

There’s a wealth of information on how to prepare your Pomsky for Dog Shows found on YouTube to help get you started, but truly, this is something you should look for a local expert to help you with:
